The fight was a co-feature of a middleweight world title bout which saw titleholder Gennady Golovkin retain his title against Daniel Jacobs in a unanimous decision. In the third round, Gonzalez was covered in blood following a headbutt that gave the boxer a deep gash near his right eyebrow. Srisaket first won the WBC super-flyweight title in 2013 after beating Japan's Yota Sato. Gonzalez, in his 16th world title fight, became a world champion in his fourth weight division in September after a unanimous-decision victory over Cuadras. In the earlier fight on the card, Cuadras outpointed fellow Mexican David Carmona in a super-flyweight fight.
